Rainer Engel, MD, FACS
Historian 2010 – 2016
Dr. Engel was born in Germany and was educated at the Rheinische Friedrich Wilhelm Universitat in Bonn, Germany and at the Freie Universitat Berlin, before coming to the United States in 1960. He completed his residency and was chief resident at the Johns Hopkins Hospital in 1969. Dr. Engel practiced at both Hopkins and Union Memorial—and also Greater Baltimore Medical Center and Baltimore City Hospital. He has held teaching positions at Johns Hopkins and University of Maryland School of Medicine, and acted as visiting professor at the Buffalo Children's Hospital in New York, Children's Hospital in Washington D.C., the University of Chicago, one major medical center in Detroit and two in Germany. Dr. Engel joined the AUA in 1976.
Retired from active practice and teaching at Hopkins, Dr. Engel coordinates, prepares and executes exhibits for the museum.
