Guy W. Leadbetter Jr., 96, of Cambridge, died peacefully on Sunday, July 24, 2022, at home with family by his side.
Dr. Leadbetter was born in Washington D.C., on July 26, 1926, to Guy and Alice (Johnson) Leadbetter. He graduated from Bowdoin College in Maine in 1949 (his studies were interrupted by Army service from 1944-1946) and went on to Johns Hopkins Medical School in Baltimore, MD, graduating in 1953. He interned in urology at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston under his uncle, Dr. Wyland Leadbetter. He came to the University of Vermont Medical Center in 1966 to practice urology, as well as to teach at the University of Vermont Medical School.
Dr. Leadbetter was a member of the American Medical Association, the American College of Surgeons, the American Association of Genitourinary Surgeons, and served on the Executive Board of the American Urological Association from 1981-1987, becoming AUA President in 1991.
Guy was passionate about his work in the medical world. He cared deeply for his patients, nurses, and colleagues. He was well-known worldwide as a surgeon and inventor of several surgical techniques. Guy and his wife of seventy-two years, Nadia, shared an adventurous life together. Nature, conservation, skiing, biking, photography, backpacking and camping were among their many passions. Family always came first.
He is survived by his son, Guy W. Leadbetter III (Gig), daughter Linda Leadbetter Sheean, daughter Andrea (Annie) Leadbetter; his sister, Patricia King; grandchildren, Robby, Annie and Dana Larkin, Lillian and Wyland Seibert, Kate Leadbetter Pettis, and Molly Leadbetter; and three great-grandchildren.
