2025 History Forum and AUA Earl Nation Retrospectroscope Award
It’s time to submit abstracts for the 2025 AUA Forum on the History of Urology! As you work on your abstracts, keep in mind the possibility of submitting a completed manuscript for the Retrospectroscope Award, due about one month after the AUA Annual Meeting. Dr. Thomas Osinski of Rochester Medical Center put together an excellent presentation and manuscript on the history of this Award in 2023. Not only did his work win the Honorable Mention Award, but it has been published in the International Journal of Urologic History (IJUH)!

Dr. Jennifer Gordetsky was an early winner of the AUA Earl Nation Retrospectroscope Award (2008, to be exact) for her presentation and paper entitled "Mysticism and Urology in Ancient Egypt." Dr. Gordetsky examined the practice of urology in ancient Egypt using sources such as the Edwin Smith and Ebers Papyri. Her skillful presentation showcased her superior research skills and extensive documentation, inspiring the respect and votes of the AUA History Committee.

Medical student Aurora Grutman submitted her paper entitled Great Expectations: A Brief History of Women Residents at the Brady Urological Institute at Johns Hopkins Medicine, 1980-2022. She graciously wrote an article about how she came to write this paper (in case you need some inspiration) and is now working on getting it published.

Benjamin Thomas Brown, MD (1948 – 2024)
Dr. Brown attended college at Johns Hopkins University and medical school at West Virginia University. He completed two years of surgical training at West Virginia University before his Urology Residency at the University of Miami. In addition to his medical training, Dr. Brown went on to earn an MBA at the University of South Florida.

Carl A. Olsson, MD (1938 – 2024)
Dr. Carl Olsson served on the AUA Board of Directors and many Committees for over 25 years. Dr. Olsson was AUA Secretary from 2002-2006, a time of great change and growth for the AUA, as the organization built and relocated to a new Headquarters, consolidated the Office of Education, and created the AUA Foundation (now Urology Care Foundation). He was the first Editor (2014) of the AUA’s publication, Urology Practice.

Sakti Das, MD, FACS (1939-2024)
Sakti Das, MD, FACS, was a former AUA Historian (2006-2010), William P. Didusch Art & History Award Winner (2004), and 2022 Urology Care Foundation Humanitarian Recognition Award Winner. He edited eight urologic textbooks, published over 200 articles (many on urologic history), served as a reviewer on numerous urologic publications, and created award-winning urologic films.
