Benjamin Thomas Brown, MD (1948 – 2024)

The AUA heard this week of the death of Dr. B. Thomas Brown from his daughter, Dr. Elizabeth Timbrook Brown. She wrote the obituary below for her father. We send our condolences to the family along with much gratitude for Dr. B.T. Brown’s many years of service to the AUA.

Benjamin Thomas Brown, MD, MBA, FACS was born the son of Benjamin Porter Brown and Nancy Jo Ballengee Brown on September 30, 1948 in Beckley, WV. Dr. Brown is survived by his daughter, Elizabeth Timbrook Brown, MD, MPH and her husband, David Hulan Hastings, and their two children Lucas Skelton Hastings (5), and Whitney Elizabeth Hastings (2); and his son James Schuyler Brown, Esq. and his wife, Amelia Pearson Brown, and their two children James Dean Brown (2) and Harper James Brown (7 months). He is also survived by Kimberlee Timbrook Brown, MD, his former wife of 32 years, and his current long-term partner of over 10 years, Edward Alton Adams.

Dr. Brown attended college at Johns Hopkins University and medical school at West Virginia University.  He completed two years of surgical training at West Virginia University before his Urology Residency at the University of Miami. In addition to his medical training, Dr. Brown went on to earn an MBA at the University of South Florida.

Dr. Brown was appointed a Diplomat of the American Board of Urology in 1980 and practiced in Daytona Beach, Florida from 1978-2014. He led a distinguished career in administrative medicine and Urology. Locally, he served as Chair for the Department of Urology at Halifax Medical Center, Chief of Surgery and President of Medical Staff at Florida Hospital, Ormond, and President of the Volusia County Medical Society. He was President of the American Cancer Society, Daytona Division and Chair of the Florida Division. He also served as President of the Independent Child Abuse Relief Enterprises (I-CARE), as a Delegate from Volusia County to the Florida Medical Association House of Delegates, and as Chair of the Volusia County Cooperative Health Group.

He was appointed to the Executive Committee of the Florida Urological Society, and then served the organization as Chair of the By Laws Committee, Chair of the Membership Committee, Secretary, and then as President. He was also elected to the Southeastern Section of the American Urological Association (AUA) as a Delegate from Florida, and after many years of dedicated service was elected President of the Southeastern Section of the AUA. Dr. Brown served on the Board of the AUA and was appointed to many AUA committees through his tenure. He also served on the board of the American Association of Clinical Urologists, and was later President. Dr. Brown served on the Board of UROPAC and was a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, serving as Chair for the Candidate Applications Committee.

Dr. Brown was extremely active in his community outside of medicine. He was appointed to the Board of Directors for the Ormond Memorial Art Museum, serving as President from 2018-2021, and the Board of Directors for the Daytona Beach Rotary Club, serving as President 2004-2005. He was a member of First United Methodist Church, Civic League of the Halifax Area, and also served on the Board of Directors for the University Club and Tiger Bay of Volusia County, where he was President.

Dr. Brown, also known as “Papa,” loved spending time with his four grandchildren. He could often be heard repeatedly saying “Papa Loves You.” He also loved fine art, good food, and the West Virginia Mountaineers. No matter the venue, he was the consummate networker—you could often find him socializing at the Halifax River Yacht Club, having been a member there since 1987.

When not traveling to visit his grandchildren, he loved traveling the world, and passed away July 14, 2024 on his last international trip with Al cruising through Greece and Turkey. Some of his proudest moments were giving gifts to his loved ones that he had handpicked on his far-away journeys.

In memory of their art-loving father, Brook and Schuyler Brown request, in lieu of flowers, that donations be made in their father’s honor to the Ormond Memorial Art Museum, 78 East Granada Blvd., Ormond Beach, FL 32176. https://ormondartmuseum.app.neoncrm.com/forms/tombrownmd
